Medicare Enrollment Periods
Understanding when to enroll in Medicare is essential to ensuring your health coverage needs are met. Below are the key enrollment periods to keep in mind:
1. Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
This is your first opportunity to enroll in Medicare, starting 3 months before the month you turn 65, including your birthday month, and ending 3 months after. If you’re under 65 and qualify due to a disability, your IEP begins after 24 months of receiving Social Security Disability benefits.
2. Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
Dates: October 15 – December 7
During this time, you can:Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan (or vice versa).
Change Medicare Advantage plans.
Enroll, drop, or switch Medicare Part D prescription drug plans.
Changes take effect on January 1 of the following year.
3. General Enrollment Period (GEP)
Dates: January 1 – March 31
For those who didn’t sign up for Medicare Part A or Part B when first eligible. Coverage begins July 1, and a late enrollment penalty may apply.4. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period
Dates: January 1 – March 31
If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can:Switch to another Medicare Advantage plan.
Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare (with the option to add a Part D plan).
5. Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)
Certain life events, like moving out of your plan’s service area, losing employer coverage, or qualifying for Medicaid, may allow you to enroll in or change plans outside the standard periods.
